Graduating from high school is a huge accomplishment and on top of that, you’ll feel great to finally be away from high school and all of the studying that came with it. However, after high school, you have to start thinking about what’s next in life and this is where things get really difficult. Some people choose to further their education and go to college or university, while others want to get right into a career.
If you’re someone who’s interested in the latter then continue reading and find out how to choose a career after high school.
Know What You Want
This can be the most difficult part of choosing a career. You have to know what you want out of a career and have to have a good idea of what direction you want to take in life.
Some people choose to go to college, others choose to jump into a career straight away, and some people choose to take a gap year to find themselves and discover what it is that they want out of life. Don’t go to college because you were pressured into it, go because that’s where you want to go to get to a place in life that you’re happy with.
While it’s expected of millennials to further their education and get a great career straight away, that isn’t often the case. Consider an internship or an entry-level job at a company that you have a genuine interest in. Getting a job early on in life is a great way to save up some money too!
Do Your Research
Simply taking an hour or so to browse careers online can really help get the mind flowing. Look into some of the different careers that others in your age group have pursued and consider whether or not you’d like to pursue a similar path.
Even just reading through a job searching website will help you figure out how to choose a career after high school.
Consider Your Interests
Don’t jump into the first job that you see because you’re desperate. A lot of people do this and within a few weeks, they find themselves full of regret and unhappy with the decision that they have made – but are too stubborn to quit.
Think about what you’re interested in and some of the jobs that reflect your interests. To get the most out of a career you have to be able to get some enjoyment out of what you’re doing.
Seek Career Counselling
There’s no shame in asking for help, especially considering how important your future is. After you have booked an appointment with a career counsellor, they will make suggestions to you based on your past education, what your interests are, and will help you to get your foot in the door with appropriate employers.
If you still have a year or so before you graduate, a career counsellor may recommend that you look into different courses at your high school so that you can get the grades that are needed pursue a certain career path that genuinely interests you.
Take a Career Test
